  1. In CA you can do the following:

    1. Graduate with a bachelor's degree and apply for a teaching position- teach while you get school district support to move you from an "intern" to a full fledged teacher

    2. Teach with a B.A. and an "emergency credential" provided by some high need, urban districts. Then see the school district part above.

    3. Teach with a B.A. AND a preliminary teaching credential- which typically requires an extra year of schooling- in a School of Education OR some schools allow a "fast track" to get you a B.A. AND a credential. You will then be a "probationary" teacher- see the school district stuff above. You will have two years before moving on to "permanent status."

    4. Or you can be an overachiever and earn a teaching credential with a masters degree after getting a B.A. In some districts, this entitles you to a (small) stipend. You will still be a "probationary" teacher however...

    So there you go.

  2. In order to teach you have to become certified. However, it all depends what your background is. At the least you need a bachelors degree from a college/university. If you are still in college I suggest you talk to you academic advisor about options you can take. Many colleges have a school of education which offers pathways to obtain certification. There are some colleges/universities that were created as schools for teaching (ECU was ECTC East Carolina Teaching College, and Edinboro University of Penn. was once and still mainly is a teaching college.) Yet, if you are out of school with your bachelors go ahead and apply to the schools, you will become what is known as a "lateral entry" teacher. You will still need to take classes at a college while teaching to obtain your certification, and pass the Praxis 1 & 2. Don't worry 1 was really easy for me, and 2 was really challenging but I like that in tests. Hope this helped

  3. Almost all colleges and universities have a School of Education, a divison that specializes in teacher training. The courses of Education range from bachelor to doctorate level.

To teach, you need at least a bachelor's degree. In New York, you have to earn a master's within 5 years of starting.

I had a bachelor's in something unrelated but I earned a master's in education within my first 2 years of teaching.

  4. You usually must go through a college of Education to get a teaching degree and you must

student teach.    States require you to obtain licensure now to become a teacher and that requires you to pass exams over the content you will teach and exams regarding teaching methods and learning styles.

It is possible to become a teacher without having a degree from a college of education through something called Alternative Certification or Licensure, but that is more difficult than just attending a school of Education and taking your

Praxis(The National Teacher Exam much like the bar for lawyers or the CPA for accountants)

Believe it or not, you do not have to go to law school to become a lawyer.  If you can obtain sufficient knowledge independently to pass your state bar, you may become an attorney.   Very few

people have the talent to do it this way however!!

  5. Each school has different laws about that it takes to become a teacher (and, by the way, to become a lawyer.  It is NOT possible in many states to become a lawyer through self-study.  In some you have to go to law school.  In others, you have to find a judge to teach you if you don't go to law school).  In most states, you need to take at least some teaching-related classes at a school of education in order to get a teaching credential, either as part of your bachelors degree program or in addition to your bachelors degree.
