    The official position is described in the FIDE regulations.

    It doesn't necessarily have to be white and black, the lighter color is white and the darker color is black.

  6. From the players perspective;

    The vertical columns of squares are called 'ranks'

    The horizontal columns are called 'files'

    The diagnol portions of the board are called 'diagnols'

    As for the sides, I can't say I've heard of a one word term for them. There are terms for each rank, (A-H), and each file, (1-8) but no term for each side.
