Question:

Is there a time of day when wasps are not in the garden?

My vegetable garden needs weeding terribly, but when I go out there, there are always wasps in there...a few...5 or more...is there a time of day when they might not be there? Could be a nest in there maybe...

Also...how do I get rid of weeds organically in my veggie garden? They are going (growing!) wild!

Thanx in advance!

  1. nighttime!

  2. to get rid of the weeds that are there you need to pull them there just isn't any other way but once you have them pulled use 4 or 5 layers of newspaper to cover the ground around your plants then for looks i like to cover that with mulch.

night is the time to avoid the hornets and bees, if they are indeed hornets try to find the nest and at night spray it with your hose, no need for any chemicals

  3. Wasps tend not to get active until it gets warmer and is light, so early in the morning is best. It would be a good idea to find where they live and get rid of the nest. Although wasps are beneficial insects they are no fun to have in the garden.

Weeds in the veg garden? -- mulching and hand weeding are the only way to go. I use thick layers of partially rotted leaves from the previous year - very little can get through, and the leaves break down to make a very fertile vegetable patch.

  4. Yes when it gets dark they usually go home

  5. Your best bet is during dusk when they are heading back to the hive or at sunrise before they come out.  Another time is right before, during, or after a rainstorm.  Wasps can sense the changes in temp and humidity and head back to the hive to avoid the rain.  The rain would even help you with the weeds because the wet ground would make it easier to get the roots out.

  6. When the sun goes down, go to the wasps' nest and put a large rock over the nest hole. Make sure it covers the entire hole completely. They'll dig themselves a new hole to leave by, you won't have to spray any insect killers around, and you can weed your garden by hand, which is the ONLY organic weed-control there is.

Next time you plant, use raised beds and do some intensive planting--seeds/plants placed closer together in the raised beds--and your weeds will not only be fewer, they'll be easier to get at.

  7. Dusk and Dawn are the best bet to avoid them, dawn is best.

Good old fashioned weeding by hand is the best.

  8. winter! or way in the evening. as far as weeds go, pull them out by hand.

  9. They won't go back to their nest until dusk. If you find the nest, wait until after dark and spray insecticide in and around the nest then you can weed the garden whenever you like.

  10. Try early morning and is no organic way to control weeds or insects.

Only organic way to control weeds is to pull by hand trust me I know I worked for a lawn care company for 4 years.

Oh someone may suggest corn gluten meal but if it works it will stop all seeds from growing not just weeds.

  11. I have a Wasp nest on my deck, not too sure but they seem to be less active when the sun goes down,  are you sure they are wasps in your garden? If they are they make their nests in places like the eaves of your house and such typically in higher places. If they are yellow jackets or meat bees they like to live under stuff, in dark places, under brick laid patios, wood piles etc.  If they are bees they are pollinating your garden, which enables everything to grow, bear fruit, and vegetables,  that is a good thing.  If you don't want that to happen watch and see were they go to find the nest/hive so you can get rid of them.
