  1. Her papa went off to fight the Boer War, so it was early 1900's.

  2. Meredith is correct. Though A Little Princess was published in 1905, it was originally serialized (as Sara Crewe) in 1888. It was supposed to be set in Victorian times (i.e., Queen Victoria was on the throne of England). I have both the original Sara Crewe and A Little Princess; the only difference is that A Little Princess was an expanded version of the original.

They made a movie adaptation with Shirley Temple that set it around the second Boer War, 1899-1902. However, this version completely changed the story. The 1995 version has it set during World War I, which was also a deviation from Frances Hodgson Burnett's story (when it was written, WWI had not even begun).

If this is for a book report, you should be accurate to the book. If you notice in the book, F.H. Burnett mentions the gas lights in London, clothing of that period and carriages with horses pulling them. For instance, this chapter http://www.online-literature.com/view.ph... talks about the carriage with its tall horses drawn up to the "Indian gentleman's" door (next door to the school Sara is in). Since Carrisford was rich, the fact that he used horses meant that this is before the era of automobiles.

    I hope this helps.

  3. Oh, I wish I could help you, maybe look it up on wikipedia? I loved that book though! Best book ever, so cute!

EDIT: Oh, I figured it out, it was set in 1914! Hope I could help!

  4. It is set in Victorian-era England; it was written in 1905.
