Question:

Is there a town named Szkiblewo in Russia?

I am helping a friend research her ancestry, and we found what we *think* reads "Szkiblewo", Russia under the name of her grandmother, in the family Bible.

I know it isn't much to go on -- and we couldn't find it on a map, or google/yahoo searches. I was hoping someone would know if it is a town in Russia, and if not, could there be a town with a similar spelling (the handwriting was pretty hard to decipher -- we could have easily gotten some letters incorrect).

Many thanks in advance :)

  1. like other people said the spelling may be incorrect or at least not the only one possible as with some russian names there is no unambigouos way of writing those names using english letters.  you need to find out some more info.  for the starters try finding out about the region / district in which the town is located.  then you may try contacting authorities or even local internet communities in that particular region / district to see if the name rings the bell (even if they spell it differently they will likely figure it out).

  2. may be Shibolovo?

    Small cottege community near Moscow.

  3. there isn't. (that is if Szkiblewo is exactly what you're looking for)

    (:

    but i agree with sirano..

  4. There are two villages with name Skoblevo in Russia, in different rigions:  in Yaroslavskaya Oblast (Rigion), in Volgogradskaya Oblast.

Also one village with name Skoblevo is located in Lvovskaya Oblast in Ukraine.

A village with name Skobelevo is lokated in Nikolayevskaya Oblast in Russia.

    The search depends on spelling.

  5. It sounds like Russian. I'm Russian, so I'd spell it: "Shkiblevo".

It is probably a small town or possibly village in the middle of nowhere. Good luck!
