Is there a train I can take to get from San Luis Obispo, CA to Reno, Nevada?

Question

I tried Amtrak but I called and they said that I'd have to take a bus from SLO all the way to Hanford, and then get another connecting bus after the train trip so I could get to Reno. Are there any trains that go direct by train?

Someone tell the person above that AMTRAK don't go to Las Vegas. From SLO take the Coast Starlight to Oakland, Transfer to the Eastbound California Zephyr to Reno.

the best you can do is take the train to san francisco or las vegas then take an amtrak connecting bus to reno

Very few freight trains move in that corridor---but Amtrak does albeit very rarely---however it seems you may need to make a stop off in Sacramento in order to get to your final destination.

I dunno who you talked to, but you want Amtrak #14, "Coast Starlight", SLO to Oakland, Ca.  Change to Train #6, Oakland  to Reno.  I've worked them both and they're still running.

Website difficult and difficult to negotiate.  Use the good ol' telephone (again) and call 1-800-USA-RAIL.  Give them the above info.  If you're willing to invest 10 minutes (max) for a wait, you can deal with a real person and things are much smoother, including more detail than available on website, with less chance of a s***w up.

But, your timing is consistent with the fierce storms we've had the last couple of days.  The info you got may have been storm related and referred to temporary detour..  Try them again.

By the way, for the best scenery, travel on the left-hand side when on #14 and the right-hand side when on #6.  You'll be assigned a seat, but there is always room to move.
