Is there a tree or shrub that provides a food that could replace carbohydrates, like rice or wheat etc?

I am looking for a possible food source that can grow in hot dry climates, any ideas?

Trees and shrubs are slow growing and invest a lot of energy into wood.  So you will never get as good of yields from a tree or shrub as you would from an annual plant breed to be a food crop (like corn or rice).  You could plant a nut or fruit tree.  In a hot and dry climate maybe citrus, apricot, peaches, figs, pistachios, almonds, etc.  Although these are not as rich in carbs as wheat or rice, they will provide carbohydrates among other nutrients.
