  1. Brillo Pads, they won't leave scratch marks.  Soak chains, etc, in gasoline first.  Use rust remover with the brillo pads.

  7. The only way to get rid of rust is to sand blast it, grind it, or remove it completely.If any amount of rust is still on the bike it will inevitability come back.Just sanding the surface will not get rid of it.It sucks but that is how rust works if you don't get it all it will come back.

Regardless of what you do, you can stop the rust from spreading in the meantime by putting some rust stopper on the metal.  It will turn the rust black but also stop it from spreading.  Then scrape or brush and sand and for sure prime then paint.  Available at Wal Mart and most all auto stores.  Also comes in jelly form.  Used to be called Naval Jelly as in the Navy uses it.
