Is there a type of camera that is better than a digital camera but not quite as good as an SLR?

I have seen cameras that almost like small SLRs in shops???

  1. If you want something between compact and SLR then a bridge camera might be what you want. It doesn't have an optical viewfinder but it uses the LCD to show you exactly what you are going to capture. Some of them have really nice lenses.


  2. Yes, cameras that look like small SLRs but are not really SLRs are better than the usual compact cameras. The trademark features of these are a hand grip and a poppable flash. They also have more settings. They are usually called "high-performance" cameras.

  3. The answer is yes; these are top end point and shoot cameras. They are characteristed by having a large diameter lens and often have impressive magnification specifications.

    Olympus, Panasonic, Sony are just a few brands that have these types of cameras. Go to DIGIREVIEW and for example type in Panasonic DMC-FZ8 this site rates all digi cameras and is not hooked up to any one brand.

  4. They are P&S cameras that are called SLR-like cameras, but suffer from shutter lag, small sensors (15 times smaller than DSLR's) and non-interchangeable lenses.  AND can cost more than a good entry level DSLR
