My boss wants me to house sit. She says that I can drive her two cars. She asked me if I have insurance to be able to drive other peoples cars. I told her that I have never heard of this. I thought that was what her insurance was for.

  1. There is a policy called a "named non-owner" policy, which will cover you NOT THE OWNER OF THE OTHER CAR, but YOU, for liability, when you are driving.

If you're going to be using her car more than a week, she should just go ahead and add you as an operator to her policy, seeing as how that's the only way, for sure, that the damage to HER cars will be covered.

  2. Depends on the state but some states require it.

  3. You are correct. It is usually the car that is insured. I know my policy states that as long as I give permission to anybody else to drive my car, then it is insured when they are driving. Ask your boss to read her policy. It should cover what you are talking about.
