I'm TTC and I bought some over-the-counter pre-natal vitamins and noticed, before I took them, that there is fish product in them. Is that the iron in them? I'm vegetarian and plan to stay that way and really am hoping there is a vegetarian blend vitamin? I'm going to GNC tomorrow to ask, but just wondering if any of you knew of one (no no namer web sites either). I want to make sure my body and baby will be healthy and get what we need. I will take the vitamin with the fish product if I have to, but I would like to stay vegetarian throughout. Help.

  1. I would think that you doctor would know that your vegetarian and knows that your trying to get pregnant.  Why not just ask them?  They most def. would know and get you exactly what you and the baby need.

  2. I don't know about what GNC stocks, but Deva brand makes a vegan prenatal.  They are available online if you can't find them locally.  I take their regular vegan multi and I get it at http://www.veganessentials.com.

  3. My doctor gave me an entire bag full of free samples, and none of them have fish oil in them. Your doctor will probably do the same if you ask, and a prescription would probably cost you about the same as OTC. The OTC versions also have so much iron in them, that you may end up constipated. The prescriptions usually include a mild stool softener. Your doctor will know best, and he/she can even give you other suggestions for nutrition.

  4. Go to a health food store or a natural market.  I know whole foods has vegetarian vitamins.  They don't specifically have to be labeled "pre-natal".
