Question:

Is there a verse in the Quran forbidding vulgar language and abusive behaviour?

I was searching the perfect word of Allah but I couldn't find one.

The Quran is a thick book. I'm looking for a verse prohibiting it directly, not something remotely related that "can be interpreted" as a prohibition.

  1. Salam I dunno but common sense of Islam should help you figure that out, am I correct? IM sure in every religion abusive behavior and slander is considered forbidden-so Im guessing its especially forbidden in Islam. Also, Allah swt says that backbiting is like eating the flesh of your brother. So....I guess bad language and abusive behavior is really bad, too.

    PS I have seen many verses that forbid it but I cannot remember..maybe they were hadiths?

  2. If you know that your language is "vulgar" and your behavior "abusive", why do you need a verse to tell you how wrong it is?

  3. Suppose there is no clear cut verse prohibiting the same, does it mean Muslims are allowed to use vulgar language and abusive  behavior?

    How literal and fanatic can u get?

    There is such a thing as common sense(given by Allah).Some thing that many Muslims seem to lack. One does not need to go to University, do course in logic or  follow it ( c.sense) ONLY if mentioned in a holly book.

    This is the reason why Muslims complain and wonder on Yahoo why many young Muslims shy away from religion. U cannot have intelligence and fanatic bigotry in the same brain.

  4. Yes.Quran wants to climb the spiritual sublime but uttering vulger language is detestable in society everwhere.

  5. vulgar language and abusive behaviour are not clear terms, these are subjective terms. Quran is much more clear that what you expect.

    However, I have some here.

    104:1 WOE unto every slanderer, fault-finder!

    93:9 Therefore, the orphan shalt thou never wrong,

    93:10 and him that seeks [thy] help shalt thou never chide

    49:11 O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.

    49:12 O ye who believe! Avoid suspicion as much (as possible): for suspicion in some cases is a sin: And spy not on each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, ye would abhor it...But fear Allah. For Allah is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.

    23:3 Who avoid vain talk;

    25:72 Those who witness no falsehood, and, if they pass by futility, they pass by it with honourable (avoidance);

    28:55 And when they hear vain talk, they turn away therefrom and say: "To us our deeds, and to you yours; peace be to you: we seek not the ignorant."

    However, it is more important to know what exactly you mean by abusive behaviour and vlgar language. Why do you prefer ambiguity over clarity?

    [4:148] GOD does not like the utterance of bad language, unless one is treated with gross injustice. GOD is Hearer, Knower.

    [31:18-19] "You shall not treat the people with arrogance, nor shall you roam the earth proudly. GOD does not like the arrogant showoffs. "Walk humbly and lower your voice - the ugliest voice is the donkey's voice."

    [ 73:10] And remain steadfast in the face of their utterances, and disregard them in a nice manner.

    49:11] O you who believe, no people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you mock one another, or make fun of your names. Evil indeed is the reversion to wickedness after attaining faith. Anyone who does not repent after this, these are the transgressors.

    [14:24-25] Do you not see that GOD has cited the example of the good word as a good tree whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches are high in the sky? It produces its crop every season, as designed by its Lord. GOD thus cites the examples for the people, that they may take heed.

    [14:26] And the example of the bad word is that of a bad tree chopped at the soil level; it has no roots to keep it standing.

    [41:34] Not equal is the good response and the bad response. You shall resort to the nicest possible response. Thus, the one who used to be your enemy, may become your best friend.

  9. Yes brother, there is a very clear verse.

    O ye who believe! let not one people deride another people, haply they may be better than they, nor let one group of women deride other women, haply they may be better than they. And do not defame your people nor call one another by nick-names. It is an evil thing to be called by bad name after having believed; and those who repent not, such are the wrongdoers. (49:11

    Hope that helps.  Allah bless you.

    love for all, hatred for none

    "Revile not those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they out of spite revile Allah in their ignorance." 6:108
