Is there a way I can receive HDTV programming in a remote area?

I'm looking for any ways or ideas I may be able to get HDTV programming. We currently have DirecTV and embarq DSL. The house is located off of the main road, and time warner cable is not available.

The house is also surrounded by trees, and we are just lucky the regular direcTV dish gets a clear signal, the HD dish is too big to mount anywhere to get a clear signal, even tried Dish network. Have not had any luck with a regular over the air antenna (the city is an hour away), not to mention the surround trees.

Thanks for your thoughts and replies.

  1. One of the major downfalls of Digital TV is the signal does not travel as far as the Analog signal.  If you are living in a rural area, you are out of luck.  I would consider using a satellite system and cutting a signal path to the south for the signal.  You can place the Sat. dish further away from the house and use an amplifier to maintain signal strength.  I have seen this done in the mountains of Washington State.  Other than that, I am afraid you are out of luck
