Is there a way I can study medicine and learn medical terms in another language too so that I can work abroad?

I don't know if there are any courses available alongside a medical degree, or an intercalated course? I would like to study French and/or German as well.

Thank you

  1. Medical school is tough enough.  Most of the time it would be best to take the courses in one language and either work with foreign students studying with you or look for externships, internships or residencies to study the other language(s) after course work.  Especially if you can get paid for the additional work.

  2. I'm studying medicine in St Andrews in Scotland. Although I'm not doing it myself, a number of my friends who are also studying medicine have been able to take modules in things like "French science" etc alongside medicine. Although they've said they've found it quite difficult to keep up, especially when medicine is already a demanding degree, and then you've got to learn a language at the same time, they've had a chance to give it up and yet didn't - so they must be enjoying it. I think Scottish universities wold be a good choice to do something like this at, as they tend to have a more modular scheme where you can pick and choose what areas to study for your degree more easily.

It might be a good idea to go along to open days or email particular universities about whether they give the opportunity to do this.

In my opinion, as great as it is to be able to work abroad if you know the language, I would pick your university carefully, as its the medical course that counts, and they're all so different that its important to choose the right one for you. If a particular university doesn't necessarily give you the opportunity to study the language as a part of a credit-scoring system (ie the university teaches you itsself) then there may actually be opportunities in societies, such as a French or German society - they might help you, and/or give you resources to use.

    hope this helps,

    Fran

  3. go with canada

  4. I dont see not. It will just be a little more work since you will have to learn terms in english and another language. Hopefully its a language you already know.

  5. What exactly do you want? You are not making too much sense.

  6. You may not be able to learn medicine in another language simultaneously as you study, but you can look into splitting up the learning process into sections: you study medicine at school in your native country and language and spend the summers working abroad with organizations that travel to foreign countries to aid the poor and needy. There's nothing better than language immersion to learn a new language and an esoteric one at that - medicine in German or French or Spanish, or perhaps even a tribal language.

You would be of great value to many organizations with skills and training in the medical field and fluency in one or two foreign languages. Talk to your embassy and foreign embassies (sp?) to find out what requirements they have for working abroad on summer internships. Or contact some medical schools in the countries where you're interested in working.

Your goals sound relatively similar to what many more college students are doing - spending a year abroad to immerse themselves in another culture and language. It's very interesting that you want to do this with medicine. Most of the time I only hear of business majors who want to cross over their studies.

    Best wishes to you!

  7. Most medical terms are generic( Same for most languages). THis helps doctors all over the world communicate better. However its always good to learn another language so you can communicate with patients too. Medical school is hectic so it is propbably a good idea not to try and learn a lanuage as well. But if you feel you can manage then go for it!!!!!!!

    Good luck

  8. Sure, try Canadian or Australian.
