Question:

Is there a way for me to ride my bike in the rain without getting myself or my bike wet?

It often rains where I live. Bicycling is my only way of getting around, and I have to bike to places where it's important for me to not be wet upon arrival. I don't care if I look stupid on the road, BUT I have to look professional for work (meaning no wet hair), and I can't show up at school with soaked books.

The gears and chain of my bike are fragile, so I hope any of your ideas aren't too heavy - I already have to carry a lot of important stuff on my back in a backpack! I'm also praying that your suggestions are lightning-proof - I don't want to smell singed at work either. :(

If any of you have anything for me to purchase, will you please give me a link or a detailed name/description?

  1. Try not to ride when its raining . Easy to say, but tough to do I know . I'm sure you know that while riding in the rain, you not only get wet from above, but also from the sides - motor  vehicles and even other cyclists splashing water up on you . If you wear protective clothing, you can sometimes perspire underneath from the exertion of pedaling the bike . Sounds like you're a teacher or other professional at a school . You might try a clean set of clothes to keep in a locker - still more to carry.

As for the bike, the paint on the frame will keep it from rusting - as long as there are no scratches or dings . If you keep the moving parts, like the wheel axles, chain, sprockets,  pedal bushings and handle bar stem lubricated, the should not pose any problems . Just remember - your brakes are nigh useless when they get wet.

Again, you would be better off finding an alternate means of transportation when its wet outside.

    All the best

  2. when it rains it rains on everyone. how do your co-workers do it. uc

  3. Wear a raincoat or other waterproof gear and you can also put a large umbrella somewhere where it wont fall on your bike. You may want to wait till the rain slows down instead of pouring.

  4. For you I would suggest just an umbrella of some type but it maybe kind of hard to use while you are steering your bike at the same time. Maybe try a poncho of some time that has the ability to fit snug around your body and then you can just wear a hat so your hair doesn't get wet. As far as your bike not getting wet that would be pretty hard but try getting shock absorbents. If you can't find them at a sporting goods store then try a retail store like Wal-Mart or Target. If you still can't find them you may have to purchase some online but they should be at a pretty cheap price. It should not make a difference that the gears of your bike are relatively aged and these will work great so that neither of your tires will get wet.

  5. yeah right

  6. Just wear protected rain gear and as for the gears and chain use a water proof spray on type of silicone........

The rain gear can be bought at any walmart and the silicone spray can be bought at any auto parts store.......
