Is there a way i can check how many amps my alternator is putting out?

im wondering if there is a way maybe with a multimeter or something alse

  1. Take it an autozone, checker auto, or O rielly auto, or somewhere like that.  They will do a charging system check for free and tell you.


  2. You would need to disconnect the output lead and connect an ammeter to directly read the amperage. An automotive alternator can produce from 60 to 300 amps so be careful. An easy way would be to use an Amprobe device. This is an ammeter that looks like a pincer that can open and re close around the output wire without disturbing it. They operate the same as a current transformer and come in various ranges from milliamps to 6000 amp models. Here's a link you can see what I am talking about.
