Question:

Is there a way of knitting a beanie WITHOUT circular needles?

I want to make a beanie hat, but only using straight needles.

Is this possible, and if so where could I find a pattern.

Thanks.

(I saw a pattern using crochet, but I don't understand crochet! If there are any good sites that teach you, that'd be great, too!)

  1. On Knitty.com they have a short row beanie pattern (link to pattern: http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer05/PATTtych...

It's nothing BUT straight needle knitting.

The pattern shows the beanie that contains 2 and 3 colors. It helped me the first time I knitted this to actually use 2 different colors of yarn.  But you can still make it with 1 color.

Once you've got the hat to the size you want it.  All you would need to do is sew the two edges together.

  2. you could try going to youtube.com and punching in knitting a beanie , or knitting central , or just google it { knitting a beanie} those words would probably help u in the search , i just cant remember where i seen this on what site some one knitting a beanie with out circular needles. hope this helps u !

  3. you should take one of the pieces you've already knit and check the gauge on it, then measure your head and multiply whatever number that is by the number of stiches per inch you usually knit. then get whatever yarn you want, cast on the number you got when you multiplied and knit.

you can use ne stitch you want, but i would k2, p2, to get a rib stitch for about 2 inches. when you've knitted enough so youre nearing the end (like if you fold what you're knitting and hold it up to your head and it's past your forhead) then k2 together to decrease. then knit a row, and decrease again.

knit the final row and then cut your yarn, leaving a long enough tail to whipstitch the edges shut. take your tail of yarn, and with a tapestry needle, pass it through the stitches (or loops of yarn that appeared when you took it off the needles) and then whipstitch the edges shut. done!

  4. Yeah, I actually made a hat using straight needles a while ago. It's in a Klutz knitting book that comes in a knitting kit. So, I'll just write the pattern here.

What you need: Size 8 needles, 130 yards of worsted weight yarn, yarn needle

Your guage should be 4-1/2 stitches per inch (make sure this is correct so the hat fits correctly)

    1. Cast on 84 stitches. Knit the first row.

    2. Purl the second row

    3. Continue to work in the stockinette stitch.

    4. Work until your piece measures 8 inches when unrolled. End with a purl row so that your next row will be a knit row.

    5. Knit five stitches, then knit the next two stitches together. Repeat across the row.

    6. Purl the next row.

    7. Knit four stitches, knit two stitches together. Repeat across the row.

    8. Purl the next row.

    9. Knit three stitches, knit two stitches together. Repeat across the row.

    10. Purl the next row.

    11. Knit two stitches, knit two stitches together. Repeat across the row.

    12. Purl the next row.

    13. Knit one stitch, knit two stitches together. Repeat across the row.

    14. Purl the next row.

    15. Knit two stitches together across the whole row.

    16. Cut the yearn so the end is about a yard long and thread it onto your yarn needle. Carefully transfer each stitch from your knitting needle to the yarn needle.

    17. Pull the yarn through the stitches, leaving a little loop on the right side, then poke the yarn needle back through this loop.

18 Gently pull the whole thing tight.

    19. With the ride sides of the hat facing in, using the yarn already on your needle to sew the edges of the hat together. Stop when you get to the place where the roll starts, about an inch or so from the bottom.

    20. Turn the hat rightside-out, and sew the last inch of the seam from the outside. When your hat rolls, this seam will disappear. Tie off and weave in your ends.

(The actual book has pictures that goes along with the directions, so somethings may not be totally clear...)

Sorry it's so long and that it's the whole pattern, but hope this works!
