  1. I'd also recommend the "Xenophobe's Guide"

    http://www.amazon.com/Xenophobes-Guide-G...

It's a funny book about German behavior in general and our little quirks. *bg* And there are other books/travel guides like it.

  2. When i went to Germany, My mother and I just grabbed a couple of travel maps and guides from borders bookstore with the info we needed. They can provide a lot of information on events that happen in particular cities, regions, and even seasonal foods.

  3. If you are interested in a specific area or town, you can contact the respective tourist information office and they will send you brouchures and maps.  I've done it many time for many different cities and countries.  It's free information and it's a great way to start your research.  You can also contact the german consultate closest to you and they also can answer many questions for you and give you additional information about the country.

  4. Check out the official online tourism board. You can also order materials there.

  5. Here is a very infomative list of links, also avaiable in English, about culture, health, media, sports, state and so on: http://www.deutschland.de/home.php

The website of a magazine by the German government about Germany, also avaiable in English: http://www.magazine-deutschland.de/

The website of the Goethe institute, an institute to show German culture and society: http://www.goethe.de/

And you can search for the German embassy in Washington, D.C., here is the website: http://www.germany.info/relaunch/index.h...
