Question:

Is there a way that I can determine on my own whether I pronate or not?

I have a pretty high arch, but am not sure if (and how) I pronate.

Also, is there anything else I should consider when choosing the proper running shoe? Thank you very much.

  1. Your best bet is to go to a shop that specializes in running shoes (not a chain like Foot Locker) and have them check you out.  Bring in your "old" running shoes -- the wear pattern on the shoes will be a prime indicator, and most of the shops will have someone watch you run a few steps, just to be sure.

The best tip I can give you for shoes is that they should be 100% comfortable right out of the box.  If you have to "break in" shoes, they're not right for you.  Yes, the specialty shops may charge you more for the shoes, but it's worth it.  Running with "bad" or "wrong" shoes could lead to injury and many more problems down the road.

  2. Look at your regular flat walking shoe and see where the wear is.

If your pronate you can see which side is more worn and  that is the side your pronate to. If you are paying big bucks for a running shoe go to a store that only sells running shoes and get them to fit you properly. They will watch you walk in the shoe and get the best fit for you. I always get them to fit me every time I buy a new pair of shoes.

  4. If your feet roll in it means you pronate
