Is there a way that I can tint my own eyeglasses and make them into sunglasses?

I have an old pair of eyeglasses and would like to turn them into sunglasses. I'm sure I can take them to my eye doctor and have them sent in to be tinted but would like to try to do it myself. Has anyone done this, and how?

  1. And just how do you propose doing that ?

There are special dyes that are used for that , made especially for lenses , that have special properties to them so as to stay very clear and not ripple or affect the optical quality of the lens. The dyes are also specially made to be absorbed evenly by the material of the lenses, and not just splotch on the surface.

The dyes are mixed with distilled water , and heated to 170 degrees...then the lenses are immersed into it, with a special holder, so that only the edges are touched.

So unless you have all the right equipment, and the optical dye...all you will do is ruin your lenses.

Plus...a UV filter has to be added first , that you wouldn't have either.

  2. I'm not sure if they would protect you from UV rays though, unless they remove the glasses from the frame and replace with prescription sunglasses instead.
