Hey,

I am intrested in becoming a pilot... however all the costs put me of slightly.

Is there any way to train for free in the army or does it cost less abroad (currently in the UK).

Also could you give me some rough figures?

Thanks

Marco

  1. America is way way cheaper.

If nothing else at least do the PPL in the States and convert it to the JAA licence later.

You'll be able to get a PPL for $6000 in the US. Hour building for about $100ph, less if you shop around.

If you want it for free, the only ways I know of are in the military and getting super lucky with some kind of sponsorship scheme. Plan to spend some serious cash.

  2. As a teenager I was in the 'ATC' it's like a cadet service for kids between 13 and 18.

A few of the lads there officially got their license during regular trips to air force bases where we were sent up in 'Chipmunks' with instructors. I never did because you have to rack up over a hundred hours of flying time and I never persevered with it.

I am quite sure that they are always looking for volunteers to help run the groups and it's excellent work experience for any kind of people management (I know a friend of mine volunteered to improve her chances of getting a teaching job and it worked for her!)

I am not sure if the adult volunteers get to fly but I would definitely suggest it as a less expense option than paying yourself and far less scary than actually signing up to the military!

    Good luck!

  3. privately it cost a lot. for the best training in the world join the military (and they pay YOU)

  4. yeh train with the raf.

  5. It cost about £60,00 in the UK.  You can try and get training with an airline but then when they have paid your fees the will pay you a pitance when they employ you!

GOing abroad willprobably be cheaper - especially the USA with the weak dollar at the mo!
