My step son continues to get on myspace from my office computer. Is there a way to block web addresses without assigning parental controls? I don't want anyone going to myspace.com

  1. Yes. Do this:

    Open up windows explorer, and copy/paste this into the address bar:

    c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

    (If you have XP Pro, try:

    c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

    )

    You'll be prompted to choose what program to use to open the file, use 'Notepad'

    You'll get a screen that looks something like this:

    ==============================

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.

    #

    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

    #

    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should

    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.

    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

    # space.

    #

    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual

    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

    #

    # For example:

    #

    #      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server

    #       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

    127.0.0.1       localhost

    ==============================

    At the end of the file, right below '127.0.0.1       localhost', add these lines:

    127.0.0.1       www.myspace.com

    127.0.0.1       myspace.com

    Now, whenever anyone tries to go to myspace, using any internet browser (Firefox, IE, they all use the hosts file), they will be redirected to 127.0.0.1, which is the home address of your computer.

    In the future, if you find that there's some other address, like a proxy server or something, that he's using to get to myspace, then you can go ahead and add more lines to this file, just like the ones above, and block them too.
