  2. I think some versions of windows vista {Business, Enterprise, Ultimate} have this feature built in.

    Check the "source" below, it's the MS page for it.

    Otherwise, I reckon you'll need 3rd party software - I'd suggest getting a legitimate piece of software rather than download some piece of random SW from the web.  Norton-like products usually have something like this.

    Alternatively, if you have a little programming ability you could write your own mini-application that can encrypt, decrypt (using a cipher of your choice) and password protect folder(s).  Something like that wouldn't be too troublesome with files that you have made yourself (i.e. not application folders) and you could put a context-menu item without too much trouble if you are going this route.
