  1. What you need is an audio/video surround receiver. Make sure you get one that can up-convert and down-convert between all video signals. That will eliminate the need to have multiple cables hooked from the a/v receiver to the tv.

THX is just something you see on different audio and video products and even movies and games to indicate that it meets THX standards for audio and video quality.

  2. That is generally called the "Receiver".

The only trick is that some of them do NOT convert one type of video cable to another.  Make sure the one you buy will have enough HDMI, Component, SVideo inputs and will up-convert them to your HDMI output. (read the fine print).

Then you can leave your TV set to see the HDMI input, your receiver will power all your speakers and  1 remote will tend to control everything.

  3. yes there is --- look into a upconverting reciever---you connect a hdmi cable to your tv and then you hook all of your components up to the reciever, and then you change the inputs on the reciever to change the picture and the sound

another option could be a universal remote-- most of the ones over $100 have a feature that allows tyou to go online and type in your setup and then download the codes to the remote

  4. If you like, list all of your components with model and brand and I will tell you how to connect and operate them best. But generally speaking you connect all of your source components (devices that picture and sounds originate from like DVD or cable box) to the receiver. From there you connect 1 cable to the TV. That way whatever you select on the receiver is automatically selected on the TV. The receiver will need some video switching at least and even better is video up-conversion. Once you have all that connected you can get a universal remote with macros. A macro is a function where a remote control can trigger multiple commands by pushing one button. So by pushing DVD on the remote it can turn on the TV, DVD player, Receiver, turn the receiver to DVD and switch the remote to the DVD mode so it is ready to command the DVD player. If you want to do it yourself then the Harmony remote is pretty good but if your system is complex you may want to pay someone to program a more capable remote. I like the brand Universal Remote Control myself and I use an RTI but they are kind of expensive.

THX isn't a device. It is a bunch of things but formost it is a standard, like stamping meat as AA.  A THX certification means that THX Labs  tested the equipment and that it met their standards for power, distortion, accuracy and so forth. Not having the THX logo doesn't mean that it isn't good (that company just decided not to go for THX certification) but having it is kind of like helping those who don't know what to look for that it is a quality piece.

  5. If you have a central "Home Theater" system/receiver/sound amp that is your control center. Connect everything to that.

  6. There are many home theater systems in the market that you can connect almost anything to it. Yamaha is a good example. Its remote controller is learnable. You can control everything with one system with only one remote.
