  1. This is how I transfer my old HI8 to the computer.  I have a firewire (IEEE) card on my computer that I connect my Digital 8 camcorder to using a firewire cable.  Most Digital 8 camcorders can play HI8 analog tapes.  If you're planning to buy a Digital 8 camcorder be sure you check the specs.  The camcorder plays D8 tapes, HI8 and 8MM tapes and converts and streams the video through firewire seamlessly.

I also use the D8 camcorder to convert and stream VHS tapes by connecting the VCR to the camcorder's video/audio input (which is also the output), plug the firewire between the camcorder and computer, and turn on the camcorder to playback mode (without a tape in the camcorder).  The camcorder is now in analog-bypass-mode, which is a great way to capture from any analog sources.

You could also get an analog video capture card.  This is good if you have a lot of analog sources you'd like to capture, like HI8 and VHS.

  3. Hei...connect your camera video and audio outputs to the computer through RCA and Stereo pin socket.  Use any TV tuner card with these RCA video input socket. Use Inter video WinDVD Creator software for recording or capturing purpose.  www.intervideo.com

  4. If you have an analog (VHS) camcorder…

You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 70.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert.

**Please Note There is no 8mm or Hi 8 to VHS Adapter that currently exsists. This type of VHS Adapter only exsists with VHS-C tape**
