I am interested in a small system that could use hot air or water to create electricity to meet a home's need.

  1. G'day Mate,

    The answer is YES

You should do a Google search on  "Organic Rankine Cycle" or "Rankine Cycle Solar" or "Geothermal Rankine"

I would suggest clicking on this link below to an Australian developer & manufacturer of a device that converts Solar Hot Water into Electricity,

http://www.cogenmicro.com/index.php?select=167  There is an great inimation of how the process works as well as video links on youtube that show the thing working

  2. Normally households have a boiler to heat up the house. This boiler produces steam atlow pressure - 10 bar/150 psig. We have designed a micro steam turbine to run on low pressure steam and produce electricity. The steam after producing electricity is sent into the home heating system.

thus you utilise the steam to generate elecricity and to heat up the house.
