Is there a way to effectively put people in their places in the work environment?

When I'm at work, I always do my best to maintain a professional and positive attitude in front of others.

There is a new woman at my job. There was a slight misunderstanding between us a few days ago over something trivial. She made an assumption about my mood and I responded that she doesn't know me that well.

I don't have to work closely with her or anything but every time I pass her now, she laughs this fake laugh and does this whole routine of exaggerated pats my shoulder. It makes me mad and I want to scream "WTF? Don't f****** touch me" but I'm at work and can't act like I would in the street. So far I tried to ignore her but I need to be more assertive so that this stops.

How can I say "don't touch me" in a way that won't label me as being agressive or mean? Some people at work already think I'm unfriendly.

  1. you could say something along the lines of "Im sorry I dont want to offend you but that shoulder pat thing you do makes me uncomfortable"Say it as polite as possible and sincerely of course. If she gets angry or anything then you can say Look just dont touch me ok.That way at least you tried to be honest and polite first.

  2. all you need to say is that i appreciate you giving me my personal space and to please not touch you. good luck!

  3. Just say it nicely: I don't appreciate you touching me, it makes me feel uncomfortable.

maybe she will get the hint.

  4. Pull her aside and say, "You seem to have an issue with me, is there any way we can resolve this like professionals?"  If you do it like that, you're being firm, professional, and you're not allowing her any space to deny her childish behavior.

  5. That's considered harassment in the workplace.

Ask her to please not touch you and if it continues, report her.

  6. The next time she attempts to touch you just tell her to keep her hands to herself.  If she continues, let management know.
