Question:

Is there a way to eliminate dialing 9 for an outside line?

I've just had a business phone line put in which is packed with features and very good value for money - unfortunately though they insist on making you "dial 9 for an outside line" which I really don't want as I am a sole trader!!

My question is simply, can you buy boxes that plug inbetween the phone and the phone socket that will automatically dial 9 for you?

Thanks in advance

  1. you sound like you have a CENTREX line, as you say you have to dial 9 to get an outside line, but this "feature" is from the phone company and not local.

You can get a business phone package that is not CENTREX.. just ask your provider to remove the CENTREX and just give you a POTS line..

  2. Hello,

To answer your simple question "no" but....

Looking at your question, you look to have been provided with a centrex featured line, (lots of features, like call divert, xfer call etc). This system if set up and multi line does require the "9" to be entered for the out going call, if its set up as a single line group (IE each line has it's own number) then you do not need the "9" to get the exchange.

You would look to having a phone with some pre-dial buttons, then you could lift the handset press on of the pre sets, and then the number you need, not much of a short cut though.

    I hope this helps?

  3. if you live in the verizon service area, they have a business line called custopak which is cheaper then a cnet line and has all the same features and it has assume 9 when you pick it up it's ready to dial. i think bell south has it also

  4. I doubt that you can bypass a PBX by installing additional hardware on your handset. Contact your phone provider, and ask them. If you have a single line, then there is no reason to require the 9. If you have multiple lines, then you have to have a way to separate the two.

The phone provider can tell you with certainty what you can and cannot do.

    Good Luck

  5. If your in the UK ( and it sounds like you are)  then your on a FeatureLine.

Unfortunately you will have to just get used to dialling 9 first as there is NO way of removing or bypassing it.

Its there because your using part of a PBX which is at the telephone exchange. The line at your shop will be extension 21. So if you had a FeatureLine at your home address or at the other end of the country that would be extn 22.

Picking up the 'phone and dialling 22 would cause the 'phone at your home address or wherever to ring incurring no charge.

Hope that clears it up for you a little !
