Question:

Is there a way to fix the pixel width on my camera?

I take amateur ladies clothing digital pictures on a plain white background from my canon power shot a630 8.0 mg pixels. Since I use a model I end up with a lot of extra space on the sides that I have to manually crop every time. I take about 500 pictures at a time so I'm kind of tired of having to crop every single image. Is there any way to set the camera to a more narrow width? I use the smallest resolution that the camera offers which is 640x480. I probably need something like 640x400. Do I need a new camera?

  1. Look for a program that does batch cropping, or move in a little closer to the model.

  2. Hey, check it out, you need to adjust your aspect ratio...which means your print size is now actually 4:3 ratio for 8x10 print size which is way your prints crop too wide, and you need 3:2 ratio for 4x6 print size cropping.

Canon refers this to the POSTCARD setting (see owners manual).  So here is how to do it on Canon Powershots...there is a key on the back of your camera near your menu and monitor call the FUNC key.  This key will allow you to open a menu to adjust the quality and a couple of other things.

On the quality line you will see icons that describe L, M, S and so forth.  Highlight this line with your cursor arrows and scroll to the right to the POSTCARD icon on this line.  Hit the SET key and viola, your images will now come out 3:2 aspect ratio for slimmer cropping.  Notice, your LCD monitor will show a slim crop bars on the top and bottom.

Oh, btw, since you need 3:2 ratio, CANON Powershot will subtract your pixels DOWN to a 2 mega pixel size!  That is a nuisance that you must accept if you wish to use a Canon Powershot camera.  Otherwise, no other manufacturer does this to their customers to choose 3:2 ratio and then kill your pixels for the privilege.

    Good Luck!

  3. If you are handy with command line programs, NConvert will allow you to crop or adjust canvas size of your images unattended. It will also allow you to do other adjustments like auto JPEG rotation. If you don't like command line programs, you can try XnView which has a batch mode feature. XnView has most of the functionality of nconvert.

I hope your shooting your models in portrait orientation (camera rotated 90 degrees).

You can use 3M blue masking tape on your camera LCD as crop guides. You want to be sure that your subject stays within a certain width on the screen.
