My ISP is Rogers (I'm in Canada). I'm tired of using a router cause even though I have a $150 Linksys one I still have disconnects sometimes and other random problems.

  1. You can run a new wire to your router. That way both your computers have direct connections

  2. If you're using the PCI cards in a tower for wireless connectivity with a linksys router, then that may just suck.  I used to have my kids computer on a wireless PCI card to a linksys, and it was terrible.  I hardwired  his tower and now it's cool.

As for wireless, I now have a laptop with built in wireless and it works flawlessly with my linsys router.  Like I said, PCI wireless just sucks with linksys.  IMHO

  3. hummm - it all depends on the way your home is set up and how the wiring is.

a modem or router is indeed the best way to achieve multiple computers on the internet.

if you are having issues with your connection, i would check to see if it is indeed your modem/router that is giving you those issues as i really doubt it unless it is faulty.

disconnect from the modem/router and connect one computer directly to the cat5 cable and see if you are having issues still.

if not, that still does not mean that it was the modem/router.  you could be using faulty cat5 cables or they could be too long.  for optimum speeds, the cat5 cable should be no longer than 20 feet, with no damage to the cable.

you can also try to connect wirelessly which will alleviate any cords to your computer.  of' course you must have a wireless card of some kind - whether it is internal or external to make this work.

if you have any additional questions - let me know.

  4. linksys is weird  but sometimes its good.  u must not have a really new computer because I don't need a card for mine because i have a macbook
