Is there a way to hardwire an iPod to the speakers of an old car with AM only radio?

I just completed restoration of a '57 Chevy and would like to play songs through the car's speakers. I'm thinking iPod because it is small and could be hidden. Any suggestions?

If you know someone who is handy with electronics they could wire the ipod to the amplifier in the am radio. Then all you have to do is tune the radio into a silent spot.

Alternatively you could purchase a small amplifier and hook the ipod up to that and the amplifier to the speakers.

I imagine you would have to also use a swith between the speakers so that the voltage from the am radio can't travel to the amp.

Your best bet would be to contact an auto electrician or audio installer.

That may be possible but very unpractical. Surely would sound like c**p.

Im not a professional, but ive seen it done through old 8 track players. I dont suppose it would be any different than fm. It needs an audio in and an audie out channel. There has to be a kit by now.

If you don't care for AM radio, or your IPOD is one that can recieve radio stations, (not sure, don't own an IPOD, my Samsung MP3 player can) then I'd suggest disconnecting the speaker wires from the radio entirely, then get a low powered amplifier that has direct wire connectors on it (not just the RCA pre-amp types, but connectors like home stereos will have where the wires attach directly).

Then, buy a headphone extension wire from Radio Shack, cut off one end and wire that to the amplifier, attach the speaker wires to the amp, and you should be good.

Notes: Be careful and mind your postive and negative connections. Make sure the amp is set to it's lowest output possible, then slowly increase (no more than mid-way).

I know every situation is different, but it will be something along that line. If none of that is making sense, seek a local professional shop (Personally that's the route I would suggest to you)
