Question:

Is there a way to have wireless internet at home without a router being hooked up to a computer?

Currently we have three computers in the house, one is an HP pavilion desktop, one is an HP laptop and mine is a Macbook Pro. We have a cable internet connection and a wireless network with a Belkin router hooked into the desktop. I am hoping to get rid of the desktop soon because we both mainly use our laptops. I'm wondering if there is a way, without using one of the those internet cards, to have a WPA protected network set up for the laptops? If it is possible, can you give me the name of specific brands you know of?

Thanks.

  1. The only way to get wireless is through a modem or a sprint, verizon or AT & T broadband access cards....

  2. Thats how i am ansering you 50 miles off shore i have sprit wireless

  3. It is possible, I had the same thing in my other house. Belkin G +Mimo is a good router for the money, and it is simple to set up, but you do need to set it up using a computer to put the settings in, but that uses the cord it comes with. Once you do that, you can select the security setting from each laptop, add a password etc.

  4. You already have it. Just get rid of the desktop.

If you want to make sure you have WPA enabled or configure it do this:

    Click start

    click : run

    type : cmd

    type : ipconfig

    hit: enter

look for your default gateway, probably 192.168.1.1 or close to it

type that number in a web browser

enter the user name and password which is usually "admin" and "password", or password/password.

then you can browse to your wireless security settings and check it out

If you cant log in or dont know the password, there should be a small pen hole button to reset your router to factory defaults.

  5. The router is in the line before the desktop.

    Cable-router-desktop.

You don't need the desktop. Just unhook it.
