Question:

Is there a way to hem shorts from the waist?

I work at an amusement park and my work uniform is pretty basic: a red teeshirt and a pair of navy shorts. However, the shorts are terribly, terribly uncomfortable. Not only do the shorts extend all the way past the knee, but they supply WAY too much crotch room! I pull the shorts up as far as they go... up to about an inch above my waist, but I still have a good three inches at least left of space between the shorts-crotch and my own. Is there any way to get the shorts hemmed....upward? Like taking those extra inches from the waist? And could I do it? The last thing I want is to pay someone else money to fix my crappy work uniform after already having bought it to begin with.

  1. Your employers are too mean to keep a variety of lengths. They are stocking by waist measurement only - your shorts are probably fine for someone tall but look as you describe for someone of medium height.

Shorts can be bought pretty cheaply from big chain stores and it might be more satisfactory to bite the bullet and buy from outside your employers.

As shorts will bell out from below the waist band, if you unpick the waist band you are going to have a fair bit of trial and error work putting in darts/pleats or what ever to get a decent look.

For the sake of a few dollars or pounds I wouldnt bother - if you botch the job you will have to buy another pair anyway.

  2. cut em up and fold it over sew it.....

  3. A tailor could make those fit perfectly, and it wouldn't cost that much money.  I know you don't want to pay to get them tailored, but isn't it worth it to make yourself comfortable at work?

  4. you can do this but you would have to be very careful. What you do is take up the crotch seam line. The line that separates the shorts from each of the sides. You take up by an inch through the middle of the shorts line.

I hope you understand this. If you make a mistake, simply take out the new seam line.
