  1. I'll try and explain this:

The modem is only assigned one address by your ISP, therefore without another device (router) doling out addresses internally, the short answer is no.

The only way that you could do it would be to hook up one laptop hard-wired, set up a wireless access point on that, then connect to that access point with the other laptop.  Really though this may be kind of advanced and you might be better off spending the $20 on a router...

  2. This is just a simple problem my friend!!!!

although Router is very indemand nowAdays for interconnection of PCs or Laptop but still there are some device can replace on this without configuration needed like Routers. you can provide an ordinary HUB<very affordable> w/ 4 or more port depend on you.

This are the PLUG AND PLAY device w/c means !!! nomore configuration needed!!!! you just have some Setup to ur PC or Laptop!!!! then your PC and Laptop or both Laptop are now interConnected!!!

......PC or Laptop setting to interconnect!!!

    ******click my network places

    *****on the left panell choosed

the "create small or home connection"

then the  ""NETWORK SETUP WIZARD""will appear

    **click next..next..next

    **choose the 3rd option<other>next

**choose the 1st option<this computer connect through hub........>next

**no need to fill up the box

**if u sellect MSHOME as ur Workgroup!!!all the other PC connected must in the same grp...

then sellect the last option<just finish the wizard>

    then thats it!!!!!

you all have sharing internet connection!!!!! tanks

  3. hi

    try this

modem lan port -->hub-->u can connect lan cables to hub and laptops.

    it will work fine.

if u want to use laptops wireless u have to buy router.

or check if the modem has wireless feature.

  4. Not with the standard setup.  Some internet companies provide a router for you (usually bussiness class customers only though).

A switch only connects the device physically, but there has to be something handing out IP addresses.   The router is needed to give both devices an IP address and route their traffic through your modems single IP address.  Switches cannot do that.
