Is there a way to keep grasshoppers from munching ...?

Question

... on the new shoots and plants in my veggie garden ? Is there someway to encourage them to munch elsewhere ? Do they have a favourite plant to eat that I can plant elsewhere in the yard ? Or perhaps there is a kind of bird found in southern Ontario that I can try to attract to my yard to deal with them ? This may sound like a silly question, but I am against spraying any kind of chemical deterrent.

Other than manually removing them and killing them, I can't offer a solution.   This is what I have had to resort to, and I actually think they are cute (but not that cute).  I don't use chemicals either.
