I want to live off-campus next year and am planning to look for a room for rent. I would prefer to pay for 9-10 months when i'm staying there. I would go home in the summer for 2-3 months. If you have any experience with this situation please help me figure this out to save money. Thanks

  1. I don't know how possible this is. Usually what happens is that you agree to the lease but then get someone to sublet your apartment in the summer like a person who needs a place to stay for summer classes or something. If it is a college town it may be more possible to find someone flexible but you never know.

  2. This is quite common.  In some towns, however, where housing is in short supply, landlords are able to demand a 12-month lease.

  3. It exists, but is hard to find.  Especially if you live in a college town, most landlords won't be able to find anyone else to move in during the summer, so they make people sign a year-long lease.
