Is there a way to make a tension rod?

I need about an 8 foot tension rod and was wondering if there was a way to make a simple & cheap one myself. thanks.

I don't know what you are trying to do, but would a steel cable solve your problem?  If you get a piece of steel wire rope, and some rope grips plus a turnbuckle, that could be the answer.
