I'm a first grade teacher and we composted in our classroom this year.  We broke the kids into groups and each group had an ice cream bucket to use.  We tore up brown paper towels and then added veggie and fruit scraps and egg shells.  Then we would layer again with the tore up paper towel and then put a little water in them.  We just continued this layering pattern until the buckets were full.  As the food breaks down, there is more room to continue adding more scraps.  The kids loved it and it was very easy.  It does get smelly after a while so if you can store it on your porch or something it would be helpful after a couple of weeks!

  3. Since compost is the process of things degrading and "rotting", it would be quite smelly to do this indoors.
