  1. Every lock in my house plus the garage and storage sheds use the same key. The guy at Home Depot did it for me. All locks are the from same manufacturer.

note - In some jurisdictions, including mine, Home Depot staff are not supposed to do this because you might be changing the locks to prevent entry by a spouse. This gentleman did this only because my wife was with me in the store and we are regular customers.

  2. your local hardware store sells a kit so that you can rekey your doors to use whatever key u want

  3. Yes One will have to be repined. you will need a locksmith. but it should be cheaper then a new set.

  4. Your hardware store can rekey the locks, but if they have age on them prob. be better to get new locks since you are taking them off anyway, kwikset is the best brand for security and ease of installation, you are looking at spending 50 - 85 dollars depending on the style

  5. Yes, as other have said.  You need to have it rekeyed.  There are little pins that you can remove and replace.  Changing the pins determines what key will work with door.  But you have a bit of problem, you lost one key.  Some brands can't be rekeyed without the original key.  In other words, if you don't any key for one of the locks, it may not be possible to rekey the hardware, and it would defeat the purpose to key the second hardware if you don't have any key for the first lock.  Also, keys aren't interchangeable between brands.  To the best of my knowledge, you can't rekey Schlage hardware to a Kwikset key and vice versa.  However, there are generic versions of Kwickset, I believe, where the keys are interchangeable.  If memory serves, Design House, a cheap knockoff, is interchangeable with Kwikset.  Not sure, if wrong about the specific brands, I apologize.  I am however sure they aren't all interchangeable.  But anyway, you probably need to call a locksmith, because the price of the kit to rekey is probably more than just paying the locksmith, and you may be stuck buying new hardware anyway, because without the key to the hardware it may not possible to rekey the lock in the first place.

  6. You can't use a re-key kit, unless you have a spare key to the one you lost. If you can pick the lock open, you would be able to do it.  They also would have to be the same brand. To key the locks alike, you would have to buy a new lock of the same brand and a re-key kit.

  7. Re key the door locks if they are the same brand and model lock. Otherwise, call a locksmith to do the change so it is done correctly.
