Question:

Is there a way to make crown molding look thicker?

We have an old house built in the 1920's with the nice thick base molding. The rooms have crown molding that you can tell is not original, it is really skimpy and doesn't look right with our high ceilings (we have 9' ceilings.) Is there anything we can add to it or do to make it look thicker without completely replacing it?

  1. You could get some lattice molding that measures 1/8 X 1  or 1/8 X 1 1/2 , stain to match and nail it below the crown.I am not saying that would look wonderfull, but try a piece and see.

  2. What a nice home.

You could add some architectural pieces, such as friezes, or put another piece of molding above it.

    Some examples:

You also might want to check some restoration sites for discussions of older homes.
