Is there a way to order something and for it to show up as something else on the credit card bill?

Yep, this happens often because many businesses uses a common merchant account..Pay pal is one, Clickbank, Miva, 2checkout (2CO); etc.

The company you patronized uses other companies merchant account because it either cheaper or less work. So you see the second companies name and they charge the first company higher fees. Some larger companies have their own merchant account. And a whole department to handle this function of their business.

So you  do see this quite a bit when you make purchases from small businesses online.

Not if you are buying direct from a company.  If you really don't want something on the credit card bill (like a gift and the person it's for sees the bills and it would ruin the surprise), go buy a prepaid Visa card and use that to make the transaction.  That way, only the purchase of the Visa card will be on the bill and you can buy those at the grocery store/Target/WalMart, etc and it will look like an ordinary purchase.
