Is there a way to recover a forgotten password for Windows XP?

Here's my story. I've been away all summer and just returned to find that there's a password on my home PC. I probably put it there before the summer but I don't have a clue what the password is. It isn't written down anywhere either. I'd like to know is there a way to reset my password or bypass it without knowing the old one? I know there are programs available to do such a thing but is there a manual way to do so?

wow you really messed up! Yes it can be bypassed.g figure it out.
