  1. Try TSP, which is available at virtually every home store or hardware store.  If you are planning on refinishing it, I would use shellac as a sealer, making sure that all surfaces have been covered.

  2. STOP!!!! If you apply water to this piece you will quash your chances of ridding the smoke smell for sure.  If this is a valuable piece you should subject it to ozone for a few days the rental of the Ozone machine can be $150 or more.  You will have to check in your area for Ozone generator rentals.  This is a small metal machine, about the size of a toaster over that generates an O3 molecule which attaches itself to the carbon molecule causing the smoke smell and neutralizes it. .  Wrap the dresser in a plastic tarp, stick the ozone machine under the tarp and try to make the tarp airtight expect for a quarter sized hole in the bottom.  Ozone is heavier than air and tends to settle in the bottom so put the machine on the dresser top and open the drawers to allow circulation.  Do this in a detached garage or outdoors as ozone is a mild irritant when inhaled.  Let the ozone generator run 3 days, cut it off and open the plastic to allow it to air out for 15minutes.  Check the dresser out and the smell should be gone.  Now, you can apply water or better yet use a lanolin based hand cleanser like GOJO to clean the dresser. The mild cleanser will add moisture to the wood and clean off any topical soot or deposits.

  3. try Pledge or some other wood cleaner/polish.

  4. give it a good polishing with a good wax,or french polish.

  5. nope
