Question:

Is there a way to resolder a broken piece of silver jewellery without removing the stones in it?

I made a piece of sliver jewellery with three stones and attached silver decoration. After wearing it for a while, one of the silver pieces came off. Is there a way to resolder it to the main piece without removing the stones? I've heard about putting some of the piece in water - does this work? Am a bit demoralised as I put a lot of work into it. (I should note that I solder using a blowtorch - a small one.)

  1. Easy to use links that will help with all your research needs, try typing a keyword or two into the search engine and see what happens.

  2. The only option I can see to do so without leaving any sign would be a high temperature electric soldering gun that runs at 893 Celcius - and a very delicate touch! Since both surfaces are silver you could melt and attach them without solder. A far simpler and cheaper option would be application of a decent metal glue - on the other hand, unless you are careful this will still show. To be honest, even though you made the ring, it may be better to go to the nearest local non-brand jewelers you can find, since they often have to adjust rings they will have the expensive equipment for the job and charge you very little, and if it is a small firm you should be able to talk to the jeweler himself to exactly describe what you need done face to face, if you get chatty enough you may even be able to watch and pick up a few tips!

  3. If you're not experienced in doing jewellery repairs, I would take it to someone who is. The heat from the soldering iron/torch may crack some stones, so seek some professional advice before you do anything!

  4. Depends on the stone. Some stones can withstand more heat than other. Do some research.  There is a site for Precious Metal that has a chart of stones and which ones can stand heat.

And depending on the type of prongs you added, you might can bend only one slightly up remove the stone and add back the loose prong and then reinsert the stone.

    good luck
