Is there a way to wire a standard 13 inch tv with a regular AC plug to use battery power? or does anyone know of a device which you can use to plug an AC item into to use with batteries? (essentially I wanna know if I can make a standard tv into a "portable one")

  1. Well, to be exact, no there is not a simple way to rewire a tv to use battery power.

But, you can run it on batteries!  Just buy a 12 volt power inverter and use a deep cycle marine style battery.  You can run anything that uses household line power from the appropriate sized inverter.  Inverters are sold by wattage, so make sure the one you buy handles the power your TV requires.

In general, if it is a large TV which uses a fair amount of power, then it is not practical to run it off of battery power.  Rather, buy a small Honda generator and run it off of gasoline instead.  The inverter datasheet should be able to tell you how long it can operate from a deep cycle battery before it needs to be recharged.

Make sure you buy an inverter that has at least 40% power headroom, it is not a good idea to run one at maximum output 100% of the time.

Once you price the cost of the inverter and the battery, you may find it less expensive and more practical to simply buy a small battery operated TV.

  2. The best option would be to purchase a power inverter.  It takes 12v dc power from your car battery and changes it to 110v ac power.  Depending on the amperage you need you can get one fairly reasonable at a radio shack or many automotive parts stores.

  3. You need a Power inverter see this site for more info then do a web search for the one you want
