This happened to me. It cost $15 to trace a mo. I sent it to a credit card. I gave the number off the mo to the cc company and they had posted it on a different account of mine with the cc company. This did not cost anything and it was put to the proper account.

If you have the receipt yes. Take it back to the place you bought it and put a trace on it. Sometimes it takes up to 30 days.

Postal MOs have a tracer service.  Commercial MOs - dunno.
