Is there a way to tell which of my Windows Messenger contacts are offline and which are appearing offline?

well,If they appear offline,then if they ARE offline,its kinda the same...

try speaking to them, if they speak back they are online. Method 2, I'm not sure if this will work because i haven't tried it but i had the idea just now. find something which is unable to send offline messages, such as windows messenger (not live) or an online version, and try sending a message to them, if they are online just appearing offline chances are the message would still send, but if they really weren't online it wouldn't and you would receive a message back saying your message could not be sent. Its just an idea though and may not work.

No - that's kinda the idea of appearing offline, they don't want anyone else to know that they are actually on their computer, but maybe just don't feel like chatting.
