Is there a way to transfer a recorded show on DVR to computer?

My parents are out of town and are not able to watch the opening olympic ceremonies.

Would love to get them onto a cd for them

You can use a "dvd ripper"/converter program.  There's quite a few of those available.

I've used the one called "#1 DVD Ripper," it's ok.  No idea which one would be considered the best.

If you have a DVD recorder you can hook that to your DVR then to your tv, play and record live time. But other than that, the only thing you can transfer from a DVR is a live tv program. To do that you need firewire, the right software, and patience.  

Your best bet is going to be connecting your DVR to a DVD recorder and playing the recording on your DVR while you record it real time on your DVD recorder.
