Is there a way to use a computer monitor as a tv,like hook up a vcr,like with some special cable?

There are lots of ways to do this, it depends on what your video source is and what inputs are available on your monitor.

For a vcr I would guess you'd be using a composite or s-video cable.  If you monitor doesn't either of those...it start get a little pricey $100 and up for a device that will up convert the signal to vga.  

A search on the web for the inputs and sources you plan on using will give you a good idea what to use (i.e.  "s-video to vga adapter" or "composite to vga adapater")
