Ok so I am renting a house to someone but want to know if there is a way that their tax returns are "real". If I can verify them somehow? Or is it more like "what you see is what you get"? Got to take there word on it? Does your income show up on credit reports?

  1. No. These things go completely unchecked and US tax law is based on the honor system.

  2. yes but only if you know the amunt of the return and their filing status, you can find it at irs.gov under wheres my return. But you can't find out someone elses, unless you do have their info.

  3. Yeah. Look at them.

  4. Are you using the tax return to verify income? If so, wouldn't it be better to see a current pay stub?

  5. You can request a transcript of the tax returns from the IRS.

You should get a credit report, to see if they pay their bills -- since even having a good income doesn't mean they will pay YOU.

You should also get a copy of their paystub from work to verify the income.

  6. Do you mean someone other than yourself? That would really set up a can of worms, wouldn't it? The only ones with access are the IRS employees and the tax return preparers.

  7. Yes, with the person's written consent.

You can have the person sign IRS Form 4506 to have a transcript of their tax return sent to you.  Mortgage companies routinely do this.  Just put it in with the lease application.
